Baby goods company Baby Bunting and technology company BlackBerry have entered into a legal battle over the letters ‘BB’.

A request made to IP Australia for the letters by Baby Bunting in November 2019 has been opposed by BlackBerry Limited, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Despite announcing it would discontinue making the once popular handsets by the end of this year, Blackberry still operates as a software company and is listed on the New York and Toronto stock exchange under the stock code ‘BB’.

Its logo is a series of black and white shapes and the company owns the trademark for the logo in Australia.

Baby Bunting is currently attempting to register a new logo,  depicting the silhoutte of two pregnant women (forming the letter ‘BB’).

“We consider that the Baby Bunting and BlackBerry logos are clearly very different. Both organisations operate in entirely different markets and we believe there is no realistic likelihood of confusion arising between the BlackBerry logo and Baby Bunting’s new brand logo,” a Baby Bunting spokesperson told the Herald.
