It was a night of firsts for free-to-air TV and while Australians sat in traffic on their way home from the long, long weekend, it was with thoughts of Guy, Jessica, Rita and Keith, that they wiled away the hours.

In a night that saw all major networks launch their tent pole programs, it was the Voice first (843,000 five-city metro), Lego Masters second (672,000 five-city metro), and Master Chef third (545,000 five-city metro).

Seven also won the night overall thanks to a dominant showing by its news bulletin, with 1.052 million for 6.00pm to 6.30pm and 1.014 million for 6.30pm to 7.00pm. Once again showing a good lead-in is essential for winning those overall ratings.

Nine did 907,000 and 898,000 respectively for its hour of news.

In terms of overall share, Seven was dominant with 25.5 per cent for its main channel and 34 per cent across all its channels. Nine did 20.7 per cent on its primary channel and 28.7 overall. Ten did 13.8 per cent on its lead channel and 17.2 per cent in total.

The ABC got 8.5 and 12.7 per cent while SBS did 4.2 and 7.5 per cent.
